Nuclear & Plasma Sciences Society

The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) recommends policies on educational matters and implements programs specifically intended to serve the educational pursuits of IEEE members, the engineering and scientific communities, and the general public.  It is a resource for pre-university students, for university and graduate students, and working professionals.

For Students

education-students-zwaska_dark_matterThe Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society covers a broad range of technical topics, but in all our areas of endeavor education is an important concern. The Transactions are a repository for students of almost all ages and the Conferences serve as a dynamic educational experience for all attendees.

For both undergraduate and graduate students we offer discounted registration fees at conferences and discounted IEEE and NPSS memberships. We also offer one year of free NPSS membership to new or existing IEEE student members (for details, go to the Students page). Several student and young investigator awards are offered each year. On a more formal level a number of the conferences sponsored or co-sponsored by the Society offer short courses or mini-courses in technical topics that are the focus of that particular conference. See the list below of conferences with explicit short course or mini-course offerings.

Some conferences also provide travel grants, such as the NSS/MIC Trainee Grants (see the link under Awards and Grants).

In addition to course discounts for students, the Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant provides a limited number of travel grants for students to attend short courses at these conference.

For Practitioners

education-practitioners-zwaska_heliumThe NPSS has many educational activities directed at students, but practitioners can also benefit from short or minicourses either as a quick entry to new material or a brush-up on old material when confronting new tasks and challenges. Again see the list below of conferences offering courses.

The Plasma Sciences and Applications Technical committee has compiled a useful set of links to outreach information and educational materials on Plasma Science.

NPSS Conferences With Scheduled Courses

  • Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS/MIC): Several short courses
  • International Conference on Advancements in Nuclear Instrumentation, Measurement Methods and their Applications (ANIMMA): Several short courses
  • Radiation & Its Effects on Components & Systems (RADECS): Several short courses
  • International Conference on Plasma Science – One or two minicourses

Educational Briefs

The NPSS spans a number of scientific and engineering fields of interest. The following briefs are written by experts at a level that is accessible to non-scientists and laypeople. The purpose is to educate the general public about NPSS fields, their many applications, and the importance of  technology in our modern society.
