"On the Application of Inverse-Mode SiGe HBTs in RF Receivers for the Mitigation of Single-Event Transients"

by Ickhyun Song, Moon-Kyu Cho, Michael A. Oakley, Adrian Ildefonso, Inchan Ju, Stephen P. Buchner, Dale McMorrow, Pauline Paki, and John D. Cressler

Best practice in mitigation strategies for single-event transients (SETs) in radio-frequency (RF) receiver modules is investigated using a variety of integrated receivers utilizing inverse-mode silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). The receivers were designed and implemented in a 130-nm SiGe BiCMOS technology platform. In general, RF switches, low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), and downconversion mixers utilizing inverse-mode SiGe HBTs exhibit less susceptibility to SETs than conventional RF designs, in terms of transient peaks and duration, at the cost of RF performance. Under normal RF operation, the SET-hardened switch is mainly effective in peak reduction, while the LNA and the mixer exhibit reductions in transient peaks as well as transient duration. more...

"Toward the Pixel-TPC: Construction and Operation of a Large Area GridPix Detector"

by Michael Lupberger, Yevgen Bilevych, Hubert Blank, Daniel Danilov, Klaus Desch, Alexander Hamann, Jochen Kaminski, Walter Ockenfels, Johann Tomtschak, and Susanne Zigann-Wack

We report on the construction of the largest GridPix detector to date and its successful operation as readout of a time projection chamber (TPC). By combining a charge sensitive pixelized readout chip with a micropattern gaseous detector, the GridPix features a high granularity with single electron detection and integrated signal processing. The readout structure consists of 160 GridPixes with a total of 10.5 million pixels, each of a size of 55×55 µm2. With a sensitive area of 320 cm2, it is a factor 20 larger than previously operated systems. We report on the integration of such a large number of GridPixes into a single compact detector, including cooling, readout electronics, and low-voltage and high-voltage power supply, and on the performance during a two weeks test beam campaign at DESY. The large area pixelated readout for gaseous detectors can be applied for different detectors. In our developments, we focused on an application for a TPC. more...
